SINCE registering a top 10 hit with It’s Oh So Quiet in 1995, Icelandic pop Bjork has been anything but. She has dedicated her songs to political causes including the independence of Kosovo, Tibet and, er, the Faroe Islands.
Her latest target is closer to home. The singer/songwriter is performing a concert tomorrow to raise awareness of what some people are calling Iceland’s next economic disaster. In a process that bears an uncanny resemblance to the sell-off of Iceland’s banks 10 years ago, the government is selling 50pc of its potentially highly lucrative geothermal energy resources (that’s geysers to you and me) to Canada’s Magma Energy.
This is a good deal – for Magma Energy. The company is buying a 130-year lease on the energy source for what has been described as a peppercorn rent
